English conversation listening practice: TRAVEL

More free English listening practice!

Just for fun, I made a visual component to go with a listening activity from Nice Talking with You. The featured listening is called "Global Voices," because you can hear Australian, New Zealand, and British English, as well as excellent English by non-native English speakers from Africa, South America, Europe and Southeast Asia.

If you think this is cool and you think I should do more of these, please let me know!! And, of course, feel free to get the audio downloads for more "Global Voices" at www.nicetalkingwithyou.com .

How about Vocabulary??

Another short survey for English students — about vocabulary.

What's your favorite of the 4 language skills?

English learners,

Please give your opinion!

University Open Campus

Because I have a great job at a university I love working at, I always enjoy OPEN CAMPUS, where I get to meet the high school students who are thinking about coming to my school.

This year I brought them to the Speaking Lab to let them check out that cool e-learning facility. The high school kids even recorded their own conversations and took them home on their USBs!!

What's "Slideshare" all about?

There's a new social media site in town: Slideshare. The creators want us to think of it as a YouTube for PowerPoints, and that's a pretty accurate way to describe it. Like YouTube, you upload the content you've created and voila! — your message, in minimalist slideshow fashion, is available for all the world to see.

Like YouTube, there's an enormous amount of crud on their site, so you have to be pretty astute to find quality content ...

Giving students advice: Teacher's comments inside an .mp3 inside a .pdf

For teachers:
When you comment on students' conversations, you can embed your audio file ( I prefer mp3 mono files) directly into a .pdf, preferably a colorful one that students will find easy to keep track of. Of course, the comment I made here as "advice" is just an example, not really intended to be serious advice to help ESL learners

Giving students feedback on their speaking practice

It's been, what, 16 years now, that I've had the honor of teaching speaking to university students in Japan. I confess I'm spoiled — I teach only English majors, so they're pretty motivated. I know that so many of my fellow teachers wish they had that luxury. I also teach them in small classes (as if that's not rubbing salt in the wounds...sorry.

I guess it's for that reason —that I'm "blessed," so to speak, that I look for ...

Where are you from? (or "18 years times two")

I celebrate my 18th anniversary this week — 18 years now, I've been living in Japan. I still remember the day I "moved." Bonalyn Nelson drove me to the airport in New Orleans. She gave me a care-package of things one should never go without when aboard a 14-hour flight. I still have the rainbow-colored pencils she had custom-made with my name on them. Ginna Parker (RIP) loaned me the money for that outrageously-priced airline ticket. In my ... << MORE >>
